Cisco Wins in Kyrgyzstan

Cisco today announced that Kyrgyztelecom, Kyrgyzstan's national telecommunications operator, has deployed the Cisco® ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Router as the network platform to enable a more flexible, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of broadband-based voice and data services to its subscribers. The implementation is a key element of Kyrgyztelecom's plans to build a next-generation Metro Ethernet fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) aggregation network, initially in the capital of Bishkek and then across other cities. Over the next two to three years, Kyrgyztelecom plans to connect 5 million people to broadband services.

LightCounting: Q1 transceiver sales shrink 20%

The optical transceiver market contracted 20% quarter-over-quarter and 21% year-over-year, closing at $442 million in sales for Q1 2009, according to figures just released by LightCounting. Decreasing demand due to the economic slowdown combined with rapid decline in average selling price and aggressive inventory reductions were the main reasons for the market contraction, the market research firm asserts.

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is bringing high-quality, interactive TV to viewers in Armenia through a deal with operator Ucom. Ericsson will deliver its IPTV solution including GPON technology in the first contract of its kind.

IPTV allows viewers to experience the same type of interactivity on their televisions as they are used to on their PCs, with personalized features such as chat, e-voting, web TV and access to social media networks. The IPTV solution for Ucom will also give viewers access to a flexible, customized portal that offers a wide range of broadcast channels, video on demand, an electronic program guide and personal video-recording capabilities.
